Video from the 11th World Xiangqi Championship

by cj on Oct.03, 2009, under Tournaments

Last month at the 11th World Xiangqi Championship, Mou HaiQin (John Mou) from USA-East won the third place prize (after tiebreak between himself, Nguyen ThanhBao, and Zhao GuoRong) and pocketed a suitcase full of RMB with a score of 7 points out of 9.

Here is a video of his 8th round game against ultimate tournament winner, Zhao XinXin. The players agreed to a draw a few moves later.

John is a top player and a great guy with a fun sense of humor. Congratulations, John!

Here’s another short clip from round 5. China’s Zhao XinXin defeats Vietnam’s Nguyen ThanhBao in 28 short moves. The video shows Black’s 17th move. This was Nguyen’s only defeat in this tournament and he bounced back with a win over Taiwan’s Wu GuiLin and a draw with Zhao GuoRong in the last two rounds to take 2nd place on tiebreaks.

Zhao XinXin wins 11th World Xiangqi Championship

by cj on Sep.10, 2009, under Tournaments

zhaoxinxin
Zhao XinXin went undefeated for 9 rounds to win the 11th HengFeng Cup in Xintai City, Shandong Province. His score of 6 wins and 3 draws (one to fellow USA-East team member Mou HaiQin!) gave him clear first with 15 points. He played his usual brand of uncompromising xiangqi, including a scorching win over Vietnam’s Nguyen ThanhBao (to be covered in a later post) in round 5.

Mr. Zhao was a pre-tournament favorite, and I for one was pulling for him….if anyone deserves the top spot, he does. “They get younger every year”, said Jenehou Chan, wife of USA East team captain Patrick Chan.

I caught a picture of him at the elevator, minutes after his final game. A very happy camper, indeed. Congratulations, Zhao!

youyingqinYou YingQin also went undefeated, winning the women’s title, with a final score of 6 wins and one draw, and edging out Vietnam’s Ngo Lan Huong by half a point.
